Vintage Tennis Fridays

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. This was a time of McEnroe, Borg, Conners...Evert, Navratilova, Austin...

Those were days when tennis apparel didn't look like apparel from Gold's Gym, and tennis shoes didn't look like spaceships. Even then, I liked the classic tennis look that went even further back in time. Call me old-fashioned. But this is a classic game and should have classic looks. Some of the new stuff is modern and classic, which I applaud.

But Fridays are going to be a nostalgic look back.

Today, we have the Jack Purcell. I love the look of these. But just the thought of actually playing in them makes my ankles hurt. As I started looking at these products, which now sell very well as casual sneakers, I was really struck by the large number of different versions of the shoes. I was fully expecting white canvas, maybe blue, but that was it. Instead I found new styles on the same sole, men's, women's, ones by brand name designers like John Varvatos, even boots!

Very interesting, classic tennis looks as fashion - might be part of the larger trend toward the modern preppy look going on right now.
