More Tennis Apparel Debuts at the Hopman Cup

Tatiana Golovin and Gisela Dulko don some stylish and classic Lacoste duds at the Hopman Cup. As we've made painfully clear, we like classic looks in our tennis apparel, and Lacoste seems to be on that track and maintaining their legacy.

Also debuting are the adidas threads of Alicia Molik. Another updated classic look - with cool piping and colors. It seems (hopefully) that adidas has figured out that you can have modern looks without throwing ugly graphics on the apparel.

Check out the sale at the Lacoste online store, 25%-40% OFF!

Sania Mirza's adidas apparel - First Look

On December 28th we posted that Indian phenom Sania Mirza had just dropped her Lotto deal and signed with adidas. Thanks to Down the Line, we now have a glimpse of her new adidas apparel. She wore it at the recent Hopman Cup. She may have lost there to Meghan Shaughnessy, but at least she looked good in her classic red and white adidas apparel.

Ping Pong, Maria Sharapova, Ellen Degeneres and the Ketler Stockholm Ping Pong Table

Ahhh...a tennis player playing ping-pong on national television...what more could we ask for? Here we have a recent appearance by Maria Sharapova on the Ellen Degeneres show. It takes a couple minutes until the ping pong ensues, but not too too long.

It took some time to make out what table they are using because the video's so blurry, but we're pretty sure its a Kettler Stockholm Indoor Green ping pong table.

This is a very nice table from one of the premier brands in the industry. It has an exceptionally smooth, warp resistant wooden top and a patented mechanism that allows the table to be folded for playback or compact storage. A very thoughtful added feature - the net and post set are designed to remain in play position, even when folded. Nobody likes to unfold their table and have the net all wrinkled.

OK...if that's a little boring for you...maybe you'll find the cat watching Sharapova and Ellen playing ping pong instead.

Check out the Kettler Stockholm Indoor Green

Obviously from the Ellen Degeneres show, but bought to our attention by Down the Line.

Sania Mirza signs with adidas

adidas, one of the big 3 athletic brands, just signed a multi-year partnership with Indian tennis phenom, Sania Mirza. Sania is an Asian youth icon already, and is sure to become a break-out star globally very soon (maybe at this year's Oz Open?).

Prior to Sania’s time with now-former sponsor, Lotto, she was a part of the adidas Aces Junior Tennis Program. In fact, she won the 2003 Wimbledon Juniors Doubles Title and the 2005 Hyderabad Open Singles Title wearing Adi Dassler's products.

Sania said, “I am extremely happy to be part of such a distinguished family of players and brand ambassadors." Sania joins Ana Ivanovic and Anna Chakvetadze in the adidas stable of young female players. adidas is looking not only to get the next generation of tennis greats in their products, they're also looking for players who embody their philosophy of Impossible is Nothing, and can inspire a global audience.

Vintage Tennis Friday - Evonne Goolagong gets No. 1 ranking after 30 years!

Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the former World No. 1 Australian female tennis player, and one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. She won 14 Grand Slam titles: seven in singles (four Australian Open, two Wimbledon and one French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. But she hadn't been given the #1 ranking back in the day. But that travesty is finally over.

Goolagong swung a classic Dunlop wooden racquet. While we couldn't find the vintage articles, you can check out Dunlop Tennis Products here.

Here's the full article:

SUNRISE BEACH, Australia (AP) -Evonne Goolagong finally made it to No. 1, although the honor was 30 years late in coming.

The Australian tennis star was told by the WTA Tour that she should have been top-ranked for a two-week period in 1976. That was a stretch in which she was in the middle of winning six tournaments, including the Australian Open and the season-ending Virginia Slims Championship.

But when some tournament records were transferred to a computer in 1976, all of Goolagong's points were not entered and she never received the top ranking, the WTA said.

The WTA has amended its records, making Goolagong the 16th No. 1 player since the introduction of tour computer rankings in 1975.

Two weeks ago, the 56-year-old Goolagong received a trophy from the WTA that is now displayed in her oceanside home.

``I'm very proud of the achievement,'' Goolagong told The Associated Press. ``I was on a roll for that stretch in 1976. It was a great surprise to hear after all these years.''

A recent search of the rankings archive in St. Petersburg, Fla., found several paper records were missing between April and July 1976.

Rankings were calculated twice weekly until 1990 - they are done weekly now - and it was discovered Goolagong overtook Chris Evert by 0.8 points after the Aussie's victory in the Virginia Slims in Los Angeles in late April 1976, before Evert regained the crown May 10.

``Unfortunately our record-keeping wasn't perfect in those early days of women's tennis and our ranking system was viewed as a means of just accepting tournament entries,'' WTA Tour chief executive and chairman Larry Scott said.

``It wasn't until the early 1980s that the media and players started to pay attention to the changes in the rankings during the year as opposed to only the end-of-season rankings.''

Goolagong reached the finals of 16 of 24 Grand Slam singles tournaments from 1971 to 1976, winning five of them. She won Wimbledon titles nine years apart - in 1971 and 1980 - to equal Bill Tilden's mark for having the longest gaps between championships at the All-England Club. She has seven Grand Slam singles titles overall.

Goolagong retired in 1985 and lived in the United States - at Hilton Head, S.C., and Naples, Fla. - until moving back to Australia in 1992.

Now, Goolagong is frequently seen power walking in the streets around her Sunrise Beach home north of Brisbane. She and husband Roger Cawley organize tennis camps for Aboriginal youths. During next month's Australian Open, 15 young athletes from across Australia will be flown in for a camp outside Melbourne.

Five great racquets...five great brands...one great price. All of these terrific sticks are on sale for $129.99.

Dunlop M Fil 200
Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes.
Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players. This racquet has Dunlop's M-Fil (Multi Filiament) Technology. Which to the technologically challenged includes: Carbon, S-Fibre and Magnesium are combined into the hitting zone of the racquet head to enhance the touch and feel of the racquet where and when you need it most = at the moment of ball contact.

Fischer GDS Vision
Best suited for players with shorter, compact strokes looking for power. Recommended for the 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players. The latest technology in vibration control! A specially calculated matrix structure harmonizes irregular vibration patterns and converts excess energy into higher velocity rebounds. The feedback in these rackets is unprecedented and tuned to perfection.

Head Flexpoint 4
Ideally suited for players with moderate, powerful strokes. Recommended for the 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players. Head's Liquidmetal material is applied to four strategic areas of the racquet’s head and it is the only material that utilizes all the energy your swing generates. No energy is lost on ball impact due to its liquid atomic structure.

Tecnifibre T Fight 315
Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes. Recommended for the 4.5+ NTRP level players. Technifibre's Texalium technology, developed by Hexcel, is primarily used in the aircraft and spacecraft industries. This composite fiber with its specific weave pattern creates strength while being lightweight. Tecnifibre achieves desired benefits bt using Texalium reinforcements at key positions on the tennis racquet frame.

Volkl Tour 10 Gen II Mid Plus
Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes.
Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players. The dense string pattern in the racquet's sweetspot ensures that power is controllable. Balls hit outside the sweetspot maintain optimal power and comfort thanks to the more open string bed. It also includes a two part racquet shaft and TechnoGel surrounded by EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate). This is visible technology you can actually see through the butt cap of the racquet. Designed to dampen vibration without sacrificing touch.

The Weekly Butt Cap - Head Shock Stop

In our inaugural Weekly Butt Cap entry, we waded into the butt cap waters with the Standard Head Butt Cap. But now we're diving in head first with the Head Shock Stop Butt Caps. Obviously for replacement purposes, but this puppy features Head's Shock Stop technology.

Shock Stop dampens the vibration in its range of titanium tennis rackets. It works by drawing the vibration down the frame of the racket into the handle, where a ball-bearing balanced mechanism absorbs the shock.

With all technology, you're going to pay a little more - $3.00 at Tennis Warehouse

Becker V1 Oversize

The oversize version of the BECKER V1 has a racquet head surface that measures 50cm more than the midplus model, for a total of 710cm. Together with the proven BIG GROMMET technology, this gives you a colossal sweet-spot area. The addition of DNX adds stability and power to the forgiving features of the V1.

In combination with the new SENSOR PLUS SHAFT Dampening along with the SENSOR PLUS HANDLE System comfort is at its best. The variable frame height characteristic for all V1 models gives you an unsurpassed sensitive playing feeling. The racquet is suited for any and all player styles and levels of ability - experience the latest perfection of the V1, experience the Becker V1.

Ideally suited for players with medium, powerful strokes.
Recommended for the 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players.

Becker V1 Midplus Racquet

The Becker V1 has lots of features and technology, and is relatively affordable for the premium sticks. The Becker V1 Midplus has variable beam height (25-22-28mm), the slightly larger than mid-sized head as the name implies (660cm), 4 regions of 'Big Grommets' which I imagine are not unlike the Prince O3 Speedports, and DNX.

The big pluses - big time power and stability and serious vibration dampening, brought to you by the DNX and Sensor Plus technologies. Ideally suited for players with medium, powerful strokes. Recommended for 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players. Sadly, my former playing level and current playing level bookend this range...ugghh.

THE 12 DAYS OF PLATFORM TENNIS BEFORE CHRISTMAS - DAY 11

On the eleventh day of platform tennis Christmas my true love gave to me...

A VIKING PLATFORM TENNIS RACQUET! The best brand and definitely the coolest designs of all the racquets out there. I'd take any of these, but they happen to be in order of preference.

Viking OZ
OZ is the world´s best selling paddle and has been upgraded with Hardcore Technology that provides maximum power. And the look is killer. Features Gamma´s Pro-RX grip.

Viking Pro V1+

One would normally go for this one as their top pick. It was the design that got me with the OZ, though. The PRO V1+ is for top players. Its heavier than most paddles which provide the highest combination of power and control. And it also recently added the VAST system Shock Absorption Ring. Features Gamma's Hi-Tech Gel Grip.

Viking National

The NATIONAL is a new paddle for the hardcore player. With its high density core and extra long handle, the NATIONAL is perfect for the players who desire a little more power in their game. Perfect for two-handed backhand players. Features Gamma's Pro-RX grip.

Viking Ignite +

The IGNITE returns with a sleek new look and the new VAST Shock Absorbing Ring giving it an even bigger edge over the competition. The IGNITE+ has the largest surface area of any paddle on the market, and the largest sweet spot available. Features Gamma's Hi-Tech Gel grip.

2007 is a Record Year for Tennis According to USTA

The USTA announced that the sport of tennis in the United States grew on every level in 2007--from local communities to the highest level of the professional game. One of the strongest years in nearly two decades, tennis in the U.S. set records in event attendance, television viewership and recreational participation. Record highlights include:

· All-Time US Open Attendance Record: The 2007 US Open final attendance total of 715,587 far surpassed the previous all-time high of 659,538 set in 2005. US Open attendance has grown by more than 100,000 since 2000. Total attendance of all pro tennis events in North America topped 2.8 million.

· Record-Breaking Viewership for US Open Series: US Open Series television viewership topped 46 million for the first time, more than doubling in the four years since the Series launch. In total, 121 million viewers tuned in to the US Open and US Open Series tournaments.

· Fastest-Growing Participation of any Major Sport Since 2000: More than 25 million Americans are now playing tennis. This increase in participation has fueled the four best consecutive years of growth for industry sales since the 1970’s.

· All-Time High USTA Membership: More than 720,000 members for the first time in history.

· United States Wins Davis Cup: The U.S. captured its first Davis Cup title in 12 years.

“The USTA has a longstanding commitment to grow the game at every level,” said Jane Brown Grimes, President and Chairman of the Board, USTA. “It is very encouraging to see so many record-breaking numbers, proving that tennis is again on the rise in the U.S. From the game’s grassroots to the professional level, we have tremendous momentum heading into 2008.”

“We will remember 2007 as a great year for tennis - - with more people attending, watching and playing the sport,” said Arlen Kantarian, CEO, Professional Tennis, USTA. “Professional tennis in the U.S. is setting new records and is strongly positioned to further engage fans in 2008 and beyond. We, along with our key partners, will continue to look for new, innovative ways to showcase and grow the game.”

“Our goal is to get more people playing tennis, and to get all tennis players playing more often,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “Record participation and membership numbers are evidence that our efforts are producing results. We’ll be launching new and exciting grassroots initiatives in the coming year to keep those numbers growing.”
