wilsonk61.jpgThe Wilson [K] Factor Six.One Tour racquet is made using [k]arophite black nanotechnology, a proprietary next-generation structure that results in better feel and a stronger, more stable performance. And control is a crucial tool, as players who had the fewest unforced errors have won a combined 74 percent of the most recent Grand Slam tournaments. In fact, the [K] Factor Six.One Tour is so precise that it's the favorite of Roger Federer. Recommendations don't come any better than that.

The [K] Factor Six.One Tour also comes around a bit quicker than other racquets, creating more pace and penetration on ground strokes. And the racquet offers plenty of control and hop during serves.

USTA Launches Green Initiatives at 2008 US Open

usopengreen2.pngLong-term environmental awareness plan will have Billie Jean King as campaign spokesperson.

The USTA today announced an increased commitment to long-term environmental initiatives at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open, which annually hosts more than 700,000 fans during the two weeks of the event. One of tennis' most respected champions and the tennis facility's namesake, Billie Jean King, will participate in the USTA's awareness campaign to encourage US Open fans and others to help preserve the environment.

A top environmental consultant, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), reviewed operations of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and recommended various initiatives that will have an impact on reducing the carbon footprint of the 2008 US Open, including improved waste and energy management programs and the use of recycled paper. The USTA will continue to work with ERM to develop ongoing initiatives to further reduce the US Open's carbon footprint and overall ecological impact.

US Open Top Seeds Racquets - Ana Ivanovic

Ivanovic2735.jpgAna Ivanovic is looking to solidify her spot at the top of the women's game by winning her second grand slam of the year.

To do that, she'll be swinging the Yonex RQ is 1 Tour, and for good reason. It offers incredible snap-back action which stores energy on impact and then releases it with power and speed leading to a higher level of impact speed. CS Carbon Nanotube has been adopted to further increase the impact speed.
yonex rq.jpg

  • Impact Speed: A snap-back action which stores energy on impact, then releases it with tremendous power and speed.

  • Cup-Stack Carbon Nanotube: Incorporated into the racquet frame, it provides all players the right amount of flex to stay with the ball and quick repulsion to make the full energy available for powerful returns.

  • Elastic Ti: Elastic Ti delivers the performance players have long wanted in a frame - high elasticity and high strength together. Titanium fibers in the shaft flex and snap back to their original shape a split second after impact and deflection with high accuracy and the with the full energy of the swing. It provides enhanced feel and an ultra efficient energy transfer.

  • Isometric Head Shape: Allows for more strings of equal length and a larger effective hitting area in the stringbed. Power, control and a huge sweet spot without increasing frame dimensions. With more strings of equal length and a larger effective hitting area in the string bed, it provides consistently more accurate shots with more power and control.

  • Weight: 11. 3 Ounces (unstrung) / 11. 8 Ounces (strung)

TennisPoint.com lets you "Power Search" for courts & clubs

tennispoint.pngTennisPoint.com (which WhatsAllTheRacquet covered recently) today announced the launch of a comprehensive search tool designed to give players seeking tennis courts or tennis clubs a complete profile of facilities' quality, offered programs, size, court surfaces, player reviews, photographs, maps, and even aerial views.

Players can search for courts based on large number of criteria including lighting, whether or not a facility has a teaching pro, what programs are offered (leagues, team tennis, round robins, etc.) and quickly zero in on the courts that match their interests.

Search results include aerial views and maps plus complete facility information and user reviews. In the event that a public facility is missing some information, players can register or login and edit the facility's information based on what they know about it. Private club profiles can only be edited by club owners or employees with proper credentials.

Says Jeremy Bruck CEO and founder of TennisPoint.com, "Players can now find a facility and get a really good idea of what it's like before they ever go there. We think users are going to love it because it removes a lot of the worry about what you'll find when you arrive at the facility. We're also giving facility owners the ability to go in and edit their facility profile. So they can be sure that the information online is always accurate. It's a true win-win."

US Open Top Seeds Racquets - Rafael Nadal

b_010_nadal.jpgWorld #1, Rafael Nadal, comes into New York for the US Open wielding the Babolat Aeropro Drive Cortex.

This stick has generally the same specs found in the AeroPro Drive - advanced players will enjoy easy topspin and slice and the large sweetspot yields forgiving power for moderate to fast swings.

  • Aero Modular Technology: Thinner width at the upper section of the raquet provides increased power, standard width midsection provides stability and a wider base provides more stiffness for increased control and a faster swing.

  • Woofer Technology: Provides better comfort and control. The first and most efficient system which makes the frame and strings interact when striking the ball creating 25% longer ball/string contact.

  • Cortex System: The Cortex System is a revolutionary active technology between the throat and handle of the racquet. With this new technology, the two parts of the racquet are linked by an interface in CDS (Cortex Dampening System) material. This technology allows the filtering of the different vibratory modes. It eliminates unnecessary vibrations and enhances the feel of the ball.

Prince Launches "Customize It" - Put your own touch on the Speedport Black

customize 1.pngThere is a new feature on the Prince website called "Customize It" which allows you to choose the look of your new Prince racquet. The first racquet they are allowing to be customized is the Prince Speedport Black.

Players can now choose between the different O3 Speedport Blacks - O3 Speedport Black, O3 Speedport Black Team or O3 Speedport Black Longbody - and customize their racquet's feel by choosing either String Hole or String Port inserts. In addition, Prince is offering 2,400 color combinations for players to create their own look.

customize 2.png

After checking this out, the idea of "customizing your cosmetic" may be a bit overstated. The "2,400" color combinations really boil down to seven colors on 5 dimensions (the grip and the 4 inserts (3, 6, 9, 12 o'clock)). I was hoping for the ability to be more creative, and to impact the racquet body more.

Further, in this day of mass customization, I believe the bar has been raised on what consumers want online - such as the Nike ID program. With the Prince Customize It program, you choose your colors online, but then have to print it out and find a local Prince dealer to fulfill the order.

Check out the Prince Customize It O3 Speedport Black here.

HEAD Crossbow 10 - Power & Maneuverability for Those with Compact Swings

crossbow10.png

Head Crossbow 10
The CrossBow 10 is Head's lightest and most powerful CrossBow racquet and offers optimal maneuverability for superior performance. Head's new CrossBow racquets are POWER LOADED for players with shorter more compact swings. These racquets include the newly redesigned Stabilizer to reduce racquet vibration making them some of the most comfortable racquets in the market today. The Crossbow 10 is a great choice for the player looking for maximum power while maintaining comfort and maneuverability.

Best suited for players with shorter, compact strokes looking for power. Recommended for the 1.5-2.5 NTRP level players.

Crossbow: POWER LOADED! Head introduces the world's first dynamic bridge racquet construction. The bridge is suspended from the frame and moves independently which allows the racquet to store energy in both the stringbed and the bridge. The CrossBow concept acts like a spring or a bow that is loaded during ball impact. This new found energy is unleashed in every shot providing incredible power. CrossBow enlarges the sweetspot because it has 10 main strings going through the dynamic bridge. It has a bigger sweetspot than a conventional fixed bridge racquet. Playing consistant powerful tennis has never been easier.

Stabilizer: The new re-designed HEAD Stabilizer is incorporated into the racquet shaft area for a more sleek, aerodynamic design. During ball inpact, the stabilizer continuously swings in an opposite direction to the flex of the frame which counteracts the frames oscillation and is extremely effective in stabilizing the racquet for a very solid feel.

Review: Prince Aerotech Trend Crew

prince-mens-trend-crew.jpgWhen you hear about the new technologically advanced tennis apparel these days, even if you've worn them before, you wonder if its hype or real. This is exactly what I thought when I received my Prince Aerotech Trend Crew. Would the 100% polyester fabric, called "Aero Extreme" provide the comfort and moisture wicking it claims? Would it really provide UV protection? There was only one way to find out in my mind - go play. Duh, right? But when I say "go play" I mean go play on a hard court in Arizona in July, when its 115 degrees outside and so sunny you think you are playing underneath the space shuttle when it takes off.

How did it perform, you ask? Extremely well. I sweat a lot under normal conditions, I sweat a disgusting amount when its 115 degrees outside. When I play in a normal polo or t-shirt, I soak through and the shirt clings to me, forcing me to change multiple times.

I'm not going to say the Prince Aerotech Crew didn't soak through, it did. However, the big difference is that it doesn't cling to you - allowing you to keep moving freely and feel less uncomfortable in general.

The material itself is very light - you barely know its on. And the design is modern but clean. Readers of this blog will know I don't like all the over-designed tennis apparel. This has nice pops of color and design, but not overwhelming and not cheesy.

HEAD Racquet Deal Week - Head Airflow Racquets

head-airflow-5.jpg
HEAD Airflow 5
With HEAD's new Women's Series, women will benefit more than ever from innovative technology, products and design - everything players expect from HEAD. Endorsed by Steffi Graf, the Head Airflow 5 is in between the Airflow 3 and 7. It provides the most balance of both power and control of all three of the Airflow racquet. Designed to be a "function over fashion" line of racquets, the Airflow series is meant to suit the performance-oriented needs of a female player.

Before producing a single racquet, HEAD interviewed thousands of women around the world to find out what they really want in a tennis racquet: lightweight power, comfort and maneuverability. HEAD's answer was Airflow.

The racquets were tested to the extreme by Steffi and other women players. Their response, Airflow offers something no other racquet has been able to before - it gives women exactly what they want. The first time you pick up and Airflow racquet, you immediately notice the light weight and comfort. And when you hit with one, every shot feels solid and effortless. The Airflow line will accentuate your strengths based on your ability and swing style.

Ideally suited for players with moderate to long strokes. Recommended for the 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players.

Lightweight Power: Most women prefer a racquet that feels lighter but, still has the power to put the ball away. Weighing in under 9 ounces, HEAD's Airflow racquets are light as air, providing a great pickup feel while still packing a punch.

Ergonomic Grip: We all know a woman's hand is different than a man's. HEAD's unique ergonomic grip is thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom to best fit the anatomical structure of a woman's hand, reducing twist and torque for more comfort and less strain on the arm. The result is superior handling and enhanced ball control, especially for the two-handed backhand.

Perfect Balance: A traditional lightweight racquet tends to be head heavy. By lowering Airflow's balance point to an evenly balanced racquet (unstrung), HEAD engineers created unbelievable maneuverability and handling. The lower balance point, coupled with the lighter weight, creates a smooth transition when making contact with the ball.

With HEAD's new Women's Series, women will benefit more than ever from innovative technology, products and design - everything players expect from HEAD. Endorsed by Steffi Graf, the Head Airflow 3 is the control-oriented option in Head's new Airflow line.

Review: Prince Aerotech Trend Shorts

prince-mens-trend-short.jpgThese are hands down the most comfortable shorts I have ever worn. I tested these in Phoenix, AZ in July, so if there were any flaws in comfort, moisture wicking or ventilation, you know I would have found them. They are made from an anti static material which, as the name implies, reduces static cling that provides a smooth surface next to the skin for all day comfort. And there are cooling zones in all the right places (if you know what I mean) that give truly superior ventilation.

Here is the one beef I have with these - my sample did not have pockets. This forced me to tuck my second ball (no pun intended) into the bottom of my briefs, which is a suboptimal playing situation. That is a serious design flaw in my opinion. However, I have seen pics of the shorts (like the one in this post) recently that look very much like they do have pockets. I may have received an earlier version of the shorts, in which case we're all good and these are awesome shorts.

HEAD Racquet Deal Week - Head Flexpoint 1 Oversize

Thumbnail image for head-flexpoint-1-oversize.jpgThe Head Flexpoint 1 offers some of the controlled feel of a players racquet, but with a more forgiving sweetspot and significantly lighter weight. More controlled than the Flexpoint 4, the Flexpoint 1 is geared toward an aspiring junior or adult who is looking for some muscle behind their strokes. The racquet is well balanced (1 point Head Heavy) and the big headsize (110 sq. inch) made for a nice big sweetspot. The open string pattern further enhances spin and size of the sweetspot. NoShox handle reduces vibrations by 27% without dampening feel.

Ideally suited for players with moderate to full strokes. Recommended for the 3.0-4.5 NTRP level players.

Liquidmetal Technology: Liquidmetal material is applied to four strategic areas of the racquet's head and it is the only material that utilizes all the energy your swing generates. No energy is lost on ball impact due to its liquid atomic structure. Total Sweetspot Construction: Total Sweetspot Construction extends the sweetspot throughout the entire racquet head resulting in ultimate control. Now every shot feels like you've hit the sweetspot.

Hole+Dimple=Flexpoint: These two precisely engineered holes, positioned at 3 and 9 o'clock on the racquet head, work together to bring power in control. The dimple is engineered to create flexibility by reducing beam height by a maximum of 25%. The hole reduces sectional stiffness up to 50%. The hole and dimple allow a player to harness maximum power and control it.

Jelena Jankovic Uses Prince O3 Technology to Become World's New No.1

Jankovic - 79129540.jpg
From Prince:

On Monday, August 11, 2008, 23 year-old Jelena Jankovic will officially become the new No.1 ranked female tennis player in the world - only the18th woman ever to claim the sport's top spot.

It has been a wild ride for the former No. 1 ranked junior. Two and a half year's ago, Jankovic struggled through a five month slump that resulted in ten consecutive losses and caused her to seriously contemplate walking away from the game she loved. It was then, April 2006, that she connected with Prince and tested, for the first time, the company's groundbreaking O3 racquet technology. She has never looked back.

Like so many other players who have switched to frames featuring O3, Jankovic saw immediate results. She began to win matches, continued to climb up the rankings and has now realized her childhood dream of being the best in the world.

Review: Prince Aerotech Comp SS Polo

Comp SS Polo Catalog.png

We've had the opportunity to test-drive several of the Prince Aerotech apparel recently, the first of the series will be the Aerotech Comp SS Polo.

Stylistically, we like this polo very much - it is all one color (a rarity these days) - in this case Blue. There are also two-toned versions as well. The cut is narrow, but not in a constricting way - I found it very easy to move in while playing. And the collar is a hair longer and straighter that some polos - giving it more structure while subtlety hearkening back to the 70s when collars used to me much stiffer and straighter. The result is a clean, comfortable, updated classic.

The "Aero extreme-MulitFunctional," technical fabric provides UV and anti-bacterial protetion as well as moisture management for a comfortable, dry feel. When I first put the shirt on, I was concerned that the mesh vents under the arms and across the back would be uncomfortable - I could feel the seams quite noticeably. However, they are not noticeable once you start playing, and definitely not when you're sweating. The shirt's technology does a great job wicking the moisture (of which there is a lot in my case).

TennisPoint.com Launches All-in-One Site for Tennis Teams and Players

tennisPointLogo.JPGTennisPoint.com today announced the launch of its site - TennisPoint.com - a comprehensive set of tools for managing tennis teams, matches, players and stats. Seeking to simplify the chore of managing recreational and competitive players and teams across a range of sites and leagues, TennisPoint.com has positioned itself as a central location from which a team captain or player could manage all aspects of their game.

TennisPoint.com Founder and CEO Jeremy Bruck says, "As a player, I've always thought it was difficult and inconvenient to try to keep up with my match results, locations and schedules online - especially since each league has its own website with a unique login, user interface, rules, etc.. We created TennisPoint.com to bring everything together in one place. And we've built all kinds of tools to make it easy, fast and fun for captains, players and coaches to manage all aspects of the game."

"Each league (USTA, ALTA & Flex) also has its own set of rules, - which players can play which line in a given match, for example. TennisPoint.com incorporates appropriate league rules for each team and league, thereby helping the coach and the players 'get it right' the first time."

Ease-of-use tools include ALTA sandbagging rules for fast, valid lineups, easy tracking of player availability, imported divisional stats for USTA and ALTA, simplified team creation, easy communication between players and captains, integrated Google maps for away matches, picture and video upload for registered players, and more.

Registration and use of TennisPoint.com is currently free.
