Tommy Haas wearing Nike shoes for Wimbledon, not K-Swiss

b_09_haas_06_getty_i_walton.jpgTommy Haas is supposed to be head-to-toe K-Swiss but looks like he's laced up his old sponsor, Nike, for Wimbledon. Haas isn't the first pro to switch up shoe brands for a given occasion, but I'm sure K-Swissisn't too happy.

Gael Monfils signs with Prince, will use new racquet technology

gael_monfils_signsprince.jpg
Twenty-two year old Frenchman GaelMonfils (GAH'-ehl mohn-FEES') has been called tennis' uber-athlete. Aside frombeing one of the most charismatic personalities in the sport, he is a natural talentgraced with incredible athleticism and rare combinations of speed, strength, grittycounter-punching and incredible shot making abilities. At 6'4", 180 lbs, Monfilsrepresents the next generation tennis player. He also now represents the Princebrand.

Four weeks ago, "La Monf", as he is often affectionately referred to, picked up one of the frames in Prince's soon-to-be released 2009 line. While details of the line are still confidential, Monfils was an instant convert. At a ceremony in Paris, France during the BNP Paribas Masters event, he made it official, signing with Prince and becoming the newest athlete on the Company's player roster.

According to Monfils, "I knew as soon as I hit the first ball with it, there was something different, something better. It is hard to explain, but the holes and the technology made a difference. It just felt right. The racquet is vital to my work. It has to elevate my game or I am not interested in making a switch."

In fact, since picking up the new racquet prior to the ATP event stop in Vienna, Austria, the former No. 1 ranked junior in the world has beaten two top fifteen players, reached his first ATP final in more than twelve months and has jumped fourteen ranking spots to No. 14 in the world - not a bad start.

Monfils has chosen to play a model that has been in development for more than two years and is set for release, globally, in the first part of 2009. It, along with the other models in the series, will introduce the tennis world to a breakthrough racquet technology that re-writes the laws of physics.

"Prince is known on the tour for making best quality racquets and for always making new advancements that help players win," said Monfils. "They are inspiring players and changing the game - and that is the type of team I want to be on."

Moving forward Monfils will be an ambassador for the brand and involved in all aspects of marketing and promotion.

"This is certainly an exciting addition to the Prince team - one that is a true testament to the hard work of our product development team and an early indicator that players will see something very special in 2009," said George Napier, CEO of Prince Sports, Inc. "We are proud to be in partnership with Gael and his team and feel privileged to have him representing our brand. He is passionate, professional, team-oriented and, together, we look forward to helping Gael reach the top of his game."

Monfils joins an impressive and growing list of athletes playing with Prince including: Nikolay Davydenko, David Ferrer, the current No.1 ranked (and perhaps greatest of all-time) men's doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan, the current No.1 ranked woman in the world, Jelena Jankovic, the No. 1 ranked woman's doubles player in the world, Liezel Huber and Maria Sharapova - as well as a growing number of top-ranked junior players around the world.

US Open Top Seeds Racquets - Jelena Jankovic

jelena_jankovic_photo_2.jpgCan Jelena Jankovic win a grand slam in 2008? We'll see this week at the US Open. If she's going to do it, she's going to need her favorite stick, the Prince O3 Speedport White. It is the latest 'tweener' offering in the Prince O3 Speedport racquet line based on the very successful O3 White, used by Maria Sharapova. The Prince O3 Speedport Pro White features an aerodynamic refinement to the largest sweetspot offered in the Prince racquet line thanks to the use of new square-shaped O-Ports that generates a livelier response across the entire string bed.

The O3 Speedport Pro White offers another well-rounded, control-oriented option in the new O3 Speedport line to complement the very popular O3 Black. Overall, the O3 Speedport Pro White is sure to be one of the best racquets for an intermediate-advanced to advanced player with a moderate to fast swing speed.

US Open Top Seeds Racquets - Roger Federer

b_federer1.jpgIt feels very odd to say, but...#2 Roger Federer is looking for payback at this year's US Open, and will be swinging his Wilson [K]Six-One Tourto make it happen.

wilsonk61.jpgThe Wilson [K] Factor Six.One Tour racquet is made using [k]arophite black nanotechnology, a proprietary next-generation structure that results in better feel and a stronger, more stable performance. As a result, it's easier than ever for players to shape their shots and hit the corners with accuracy. And control is a crucial tool, as players who had the fewest unforced errors have won a combined 74 percent of the most recent Grand Slam tournaments. In fact, the [K] Factor Six.One Tour is so precise that it's the favorite of Roger Federer. Recommendations don't come any better than that.

The [K] Factor Six.One Tour also comes around a bit quicker than other racquets, creating more pace and penetration on ground strokes. And the racquet offers plenty of control and hop during serves.

Specifications:

* Si: 6 (fast and long)
* Head size: 90 square inches
* Length: 27 inches
* Weight: 12 ounces (unstrung), 12.5 ounces (strung)

US Open Top Seeds Racquets - Ana Ivanovic

Ivanovic2735.jpgAna Ivanovic is looking to solidify her spot at the top of the women's game by winning her second grand slam of the year.

To do that, she'll be swinging the Yonex RQ is 1 Tour, and for good reason. It offers incredible snap-back action which stores energy on impact and then releases it with power and speed leading to a higher level of impact speed. CS Carbon Nanotube has been adopted to further increase the impact speed.
yonex rq.jpg

  • Impact Speed: A snap-back action which stores energy on impact, then releases it with tremendous power and speed.

  • Cup-Stack Carbon Nanotube: Incorporated into the racquet frame, it provides all players the right amount of flex to stay with the ball and quick repulsion to make the full energy available for powerful returns.

  • Elastic Ti: Elastic Ti delivers the performance players have long wanted in a frame - high elasticity and high strength together. Titanium fibers in the shaft flex and snap back to their original shape a split second after impact and deflection with high accuracy and the with the full energy of the swing. It provides enhanced feel and an ultra efficient energy transfer.

  • Isometric Head Shape: Allows for more strings of equal length and a larger effective hitting area in the stringbed. Power, control and a huge sweet spot without increasing frame dimensions. With more strings of equal length and a larger effective hitting area in the string bed, it provides consistently more accurate shots with more power and control.

  • Weight: 11. 3 Ounces (unstrung) / 11. 8 Ounces (strung)

The Yonex RQ is 1 Touris $189 at Amazon.
